Hopefully you can see from the picture above that there has been no shrinkage, and quality has been unaffected. In fact, in response to Marcus's message in yesterday's post that due to advances in casting techniques the figures should be chunkier and crisper, I can vouch that this is indeed the case, which is quite remarkable really! It's probably quite difficult to discern this from the above pic, but if you look at a comparison pic of the sack that one of the figures is carrying it should be obvious (and in case you are wondering, the Citadel figures came out of a blister pack, and are not recasts):
Citadel figure on the left, Foundry on the right. |
Beat me to it! Good comparison of a great set of reissues.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem I have encountered, perhaps because of the change in casting medium is that Wilmot's halberd is very fragile, indeed it had snapped off on of my casts and was wobbly on most. It is easily fixed with some pinning but could be an issue for some.
How strange, the Foundry models all look slightly "bigger", and I think I can see a little more smoothness - although that might be the shiny vs. non-shiny material and 20-odd years of being looked after very carefully in an unopened blister. Also the mould lines seem like they are in slightly different places. If they're from the original moulds I wonder how that happened? Could it be that the Foundry models are being cast from the master moulds, and the Citadel were from a later production mould (so are effectively 2nd generation castings)?
ReplyDeleteI can't claim to be an expert on the casting side of things but what you say sounds plausible Zhu?
DeleteGiving it a second thought, it doesn't make sense because of the round bases have been added, so they can't be a Citadel master or a Citadel production mould, but a 2nd generation one. So they have to be recasts of tbe minis or new moulds taken from the greens.
DeleteI think Foundry also have the mould from the Citadel Starwars Stormtrooper? so they may well have other moulds they aren't licenced to used.
What exactly is the story behind these citadel recasts? Does foundry buy the molds? Somebody ought to release a bunch of old stuff.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know - but don't quote me on this because I'm not 100% certain - there was some sort of a deal in the early days of Citadel and Foundry that saw Foundry acquire the rights to cast Citadel historical figures...or perhaps it was the other way round! I'll have to clarify this with Bryan next time I speak with him. You are unlikely to see Foundry release old Citadel "pure fantasy" stuff though because they have little if any of that.
DeleteThank you for the comparison shots.
ReplyDeleteTony
Bigger... smaller.... that's just how the casting process works some times.
ReplyDeleteDarrell.
I appreciate your comment Darrell - my purpose in doing the comparison shots was to alleviate the fears of those people who wondered if Foundry castings of these figures would be consistently smaller than the Citadel ones.
DeleteI'm really excited about the new Foundry Perry rereleases and will surely pick up as many as I can. I just received an enormous order of the Perry hundred years war, rennaissance and vikings from them and the castings are really wonderful, much better than most new figures I've seen in the past few years. My challenge is to see if I can at least get all this current batch based up and primed before I go for another order.
ReplyDeleteWell, thanks Spooktalker : that's very kind of you!
