Beastmen unit for Oldhammer weekend

Here is my current WIP - a beastman unit for Oldhammer weekend.

I'm putting together a Khorne unit, with 5 Bob Olley "goatmen" and 5 Jes Goodwin "dogmen." The unit champion can be seen front row on the left.

Here is a cloe-up of one of Bob's goatmen, a lovely figure:

I've gone with traditional Khorne colours for this unit. My new best friend for this particular painting exercie is the old Citadel brown ink, which gives a fantastic depth of shade:

I'm currently building up a narrative for my Oldhammer weekend chaos force, built on the stats I rolled, which I'll cover in more detail in a future post.

  1. Looking very nice Steve. They will give my Slanneshi Ogres something to wade into! I too am a big fan of those old inks and I use them all the time. I feel that they give a greater sense of depth than the modern washes, but that is just me. Any chance of a close up of that champ? I don't recognise the model. Conversion?

  2. I suspect that the old inks and washes need to be used in different ways. E.g. I've shaded the horns with devlan mud wash - I think ink might have been a bit of an overkill there.

That champ is just a regular khornate beastman - you'll find him with the other khornates in various eavy metal articles and adverts.

  3. You are correct about the inks. I have found that you need to experiment with different combinations of ink and water for different effects. I also try and follow Andy Craig's tip of 'never just using an ink straight out of the bottle'. Mixing ink with paint also creates some striking effects.

    1. I love Bob's beastmen, they are among my favourites. A lot of them seem more Nurgle than Khorne, but what the heck!
