I have found that ...You are correct about the inks. I have found that you need to experiment with different combinations of ink and water for different effects. I also try and follow Andy Craig's tip of 'never just using an ink straight out of the bottle'. Mixing ink with paint also creates some striking effects. E.g. I feel that they give a greater sense of depth than the modern washes, but that is just me. Any chance of a close up of that champ? I don't recognise the model.
